Umbrellas come in a range of sizes and designs and are made with a variety of materials - some are a lot more durable and effective than others. All these factors can influence the final price of an outdoor umbrella. In fact, depending on the brand – outdoor sun umbrellas can range from $35 for lightweight products to more than $8,000 for durable, heavy-duty options.

Pergolas and gazebos both enhance outdoor spaces, but they serve different purposes. Understanding their key differences will help you choose the best option.

• Pergola: A permanent structure with an open slatted or adjustable roof, offering partial shade while enhancing your outdoor space.
• Gazebo: A freestanding structure with a solid roof, providing full protection from sun, rain, and wind.

Whether you need a permit to build a pergola depends on your location and the specific regulations in your area.

For example, in New South Wales, most Vortex™ Pergolas are classified as exempt developments, meaning they don’t require council approval—as long as they meet specific criteria:

• Floor area is less than 25m²
• Height is under 3m
• The floor is less than 1m above ground level

However, larger models like the 4800XT™ (which exceed 25m²) or pergolas positioned less than 900mm from the boundary will require approval. Always check local council regulations to ensure compliance.

Refer to this guide to find out if your location requires a building permit for a pergola.

Yes, and it’s a great idea! An umbrella provides shade from the sun, protection from the elements, and helps extend the life of your spa. They're also adjustable, so you can move them as the sun shifts.

A popular option is the Shadowspec Serenity™—available in various sizes and mounting styles to suit your spa area. It’s a simple way to make your spa time even more relaxing and enjoyable.

UV protection matters because too much sun exposure can lead to skin damage. To check if an umbrella offers protection, look for a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating. This shows how well the fabric blocks UV rays.

In Australia, a UPF 30 rating is considered "good," while a UPF 50 or 50+ rating is considered "excellent," according to the Australian Government agency ARPANSA.

Spa World’s range of Shadowspec™ umbrellas all have UPF ratings of 50+.

Yes, you can! Pergolas can be a stylish and practical carport alternative. Their square or rectangular design suits flat surfaces, and models with closed roofs offer better protection for your vehicle. Choose durable materials like anodised aluminium or steel to prevent rust. Freestanding pergolas can be placed beside your home, at your driveway entrance, or anywhere with easy access, some even have adjustable heights for taller vehicles.

Our region has some of the highest UV levels in the world. Quality shade helps protect against harmful rays, reduces heat, creates more usable outdoor space, and increases comfort year-round.

Pergolas provide permanent, architectural shade with adjustable louvres for rain and sun control.
Umbrellas offer flexible, moveable shade ideal for poolsides, patios, spa areas, and compact spaces.

Yes. Our pergolas and umbrellas use marine-grade aluminium, corrosion-resistant components, and solution-dyed canopies that resist fading, mould, and UV damage — ideal for coastal, hot, and windy conditions.

Umbrellas typically don’t require approval. Pergolas may, depending on size and location. Check with your local council or ask our team for guidance.

All our shade options — from Vortex® Pergolas to Shadowspec™ Umbrellas — are built tough for Australian conditions. Marine-grade aluminium, stainless steel hardware, and solution-dyed acrylic fabrics (like Sunbrella®) ensure superior durability, long-lasting colour, and reliable protection in harsh climates and weather.

Many umbrellas are DIY-friendly and come with clear instructions. Pergolas may require a professional installer — especially for any electrical components — though some models can still be assembled by confident DIYers. All electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Our team can also recommend trusted installers in your area.
